The Popcorn Catch

I finally got a Rainbow Bee-eater mid throw and catch, I've been trying to get this shot for a while. These birds have laser precision, after capturing their prey mid flight they go back to their perch, give it a couple good whollops then toss it in the air and catch it before swallowing it down (which always makes me think about the almost irresistible urge to toss and catch pieces of popped corn in your mouth - although I almost always miss, unlike the Bee-eater). I was watching this one and its mate hunt for over an hour, at one stage this one left its perch (I kept my camera on the perch waiting for its return) and I heard a swoosh zoom past my head and in the same second a fly buzz. It was a wild experience. Lucky I had kept focus on the perch as I only had seconds to get this image and I'm so stoked!

Breakfast!

Please excuse the shaky footage in this video, I was hand held on a 600mm zoom. This is a different location to the above image but its a good one of a Bee-eater with its prey.
